These scale forms do require some stretches, so you will need to make sure that you keep your left hand thumb low.about in the middle of the back of the neck. You dont need to use just the root tone. I also think it is one of my better moments. Im probably over thinking or being plain dense but & Using the pdf as a reference we are starting at 7th fret Root is B, Shape built from the root makes sense to me but when we do the shape from 2nd tone (C#) the third note is a D and not in the B-Major scale. This lesson refers to these as "major" scale forms, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. This goes the same for learning scale patterns. The trick here is that for the CAGED system, we are simplifying things to make it easier for a learner to pick up, whereas 3 note per string scales are more advanced.

.. (You may want to check out the lesson in the music theory section of this site on constructing major scales.) So each form in this scale system is going to start on a different note in the major scale. Check out my Understanding Modes lesson and it will help you figure out how to turn these basic major scales into modes easily. In this lesson we will look at more patterns that can be used to map out the major or minor scale, or indeed any of the modes over the fretboard. All Rights Reserved. So just memorize the scale forms first along with their names while simultaneously studying the Understanding Keys PDF. I usually use that fingering when having to play a whole-step followed by a half-step. Thanks again.
